A youth association in Kumbur Payam in Sudan’s Nuba Mountains region has completed a three-day training programme aimed at teaching young people basic citizen journalism skills.
Ngumende Lalo Kodi, chairman of the Kumbur Payam Youth Association, said the training was the first initiative of its kind since he took office earlier this year.
He said the programme is intended to help young people report accurately on issues affecting their communities in the Nuba Mountains area.
“Since I came to office, this is the first initiative of its kind here. It is good for the youth to be trained so that they become media aware and reflect what is happening on the ground in their area to the world,” Kodi told Radio Tamazuj.
Kodi thanked the media arm of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) for providing trainers and urged young people to remain united.
He also warned against hate speech, calling on young people to promote peace and avoid reporting that could fuel tensions between communities.
One participant said the training had improved her understanding of journalism and changed the way she viewed issues in her community.
The training comes as parts of the Nuba Mountains face continuing insecurity and communal tensions. The SPLM-N faction led by Abdelaziz al-Hilu controls significant territory in the Nuba Mountains, although control of parts of South Kordofan remains contested.
The SPLM-N al-Hilu faction has also aligned itself with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and joined the Sudan Founding Alliance, known as Tasis, a coalition that announced a parallel administration in 2025.
