Sudanese army reports gains in West Kordofan offensive

Sudan’s army said on Sunday that its air defence units had shot down a fourth drone in West Kordofan state within a week, as fighting with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) intensified across the region.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the military said it had destroyed an FH-95 drone east of Wad Banda around midday, describing it as “hostile” but giving no details about its operator.

Sources told Radio Tamazuj that army troops and allied forces had destroyed several RSF combat vehicles during clashes near Al-Khuwei, inflicting heavy losses on the paramilitary group.

The Joint Force of Armed Movements, which fights alongside the army, said its fighters had maintained offensive operations for a third consecutive day, making progress on several fronts.

The army separately announced that it had captured Ayal Bakhit and Umm Marahik, both in the northwestern part of Al-Khuwei district, following clashes with RSF fighters.

Military personnel also posted footage on social media showing destroyed RSF vehicles and recent advances around Al-Khuwei, a strategic town linking central Sudan with West Kordofan.

Sudan’s war erupted in April 2023 following a power struggle between the army and RSF, killing tens of thousands of people and displacing millions. Fighting has intensified across the Kordofan region in recent months, worsening an already dire humanitarian crisis.
