The European Union has launched a series of public events in South Sudan to mark Europe Day, aiming to showcase its development work and deepen engagement with citizens.
Speaking during a press conference in Juba on Monday, Pelle Enarsson, Head of Delegation of the European Union to South Sudan, announced the start of “EU Week,” a lineup of cultural, academic, and outreach activities taking place throughout the week.
The envoy said the events are designed not only to celebrate Europe Day but also to highlight the EU’s longstanding partnership with South Sudan and its support across key sectors.
“This week is an opportunity to showcase what we are doing and engage more directly with the people of South Sudan,” he said.
According to the EU delegation, the week-long program, which began with a press briefing, will include a public lecture at the University of Juba focusing on the EU’s role in a changing global landscape.
Other activities include an EU Film Festival featuring productions from member states, as well as an interactive “speed dating” session where members of the public can engage directly with EU officials to learn more about their work.
The EU will also host an agricultural event at Konyokonyo Market to showcase projects supporting farmers and local food systems, alongside a book launch on constitution-making in South Sudan.
The celebrations will culminate in a Europe Day reception bringing together government officials, partners, and members of the public.
Enarsson said the events reflect broader EU engagement in South Sudan, where the bloc supports initiatives in agriculture, education, health, infrastructure, and peacebuilding.
He pointed to the EU’s Global Gateway Initiative as a key platform for development cooperation, alongside ongoing support for the implementation of the peace agreement and preparations for credible elections.
The EU envoy emphasized that peace and stability remain central to the bloc’s engagement, while development programs continue to support communities across the country.
The EU also used the occasion to reaffirm its commitment to South Sudan despite planned structural changes that will see some technical operations coordinated from a regional hub in Nairobi.
Enarsson said the EU will maintain a diplomatic presence in Juba, focusing on political engagement and dialogue with the government.
“We are here to stay as partners of South Sudan,” he said.
Europe Day is celebrated annually on May 9 to mark peace and unity in Europe, with EU delegations around the world organizing events to highlight cooperation with partner countries.
