Residents of Bor County in Jonglei State have welcomed a decision by local authorities to designate Aduar in Jalle Payam as an official river port, saying it is expected to boost trade, create jobs and improve transport links along the Nile.
The order, issued on May 23 by Bor County Commissioner Samuel Ateny Pech Ariik, formally recognises Aduar as an authorised port and sets the framework for its administration.
Local residents, traders and fishermen told Radio Tamazuj that the move could turn the area into a growing commercial hub, given its long-standing fishing and river trade activities.
“This is an important step for our community,” said resident Manyiel Atueny Jok. “Aduar has always been economically active. Official recognition will attract traders and create jobs.”
Another resident, Peter Mawut Awan, said the port would encourage investment and improve business confidence in the area.
“It will connect people and businesses,” he said. “With government recognition, investors will come and opportunities will increase for young people.”
Women engaged in fish trading also welcomed the development, saying it could ease transport challenges and expand markets.
“I depend on selling fish to support my children,” said trader Yom Nai. “If the port becomes operational, transport will be easier and we will get more customers.”
Others said increased activity in the area could also improve security through a stronger government presence and more economic engagement.
“When there are more people and businesses, insecurity reduces,” said resident Amuor Anyang. “Development and security go together.”
Commissioner Ateny said the decision was part of efforts to extend services closer to communities and promote local development.
“This port will support trade, encourage resettlement and create opportunities,” he said, adding that a port management authority would be established in consultation with stakeholders.
