Leer traders lose sorghum cargo in River Nile boat incident

A group of traders in Unity State’s Leer County lost an entire cargo of sorghum after a boat carrying the grain was damaged along the River Nile in Fangak County, Jonglei State on Monday.

Stephen Gai Yar, chairperson of the Leer County Traders Union, said the incident occurred last week in Diel, Fangak County, when the boat carrying sorghum from Rang in Upper Nile State to Leer was damaged as the coxswain attempted to stop it.

No deaths or injuries were reported, but the union is appealing for government support.

“The government should know that we, the traders in Leer, have suffered a great loss, because what we use to feed our community is lost,” Gai Yar said. “Our boat is broken, and all our sorghum bags are lost.”

The traders’ union is also appealing to humanitarian organizations and well-wishers to support the affected traders as they recover from the loss.

The value of the lost cargo was not immediately revealed.
