The United Kingdom government is inviting qualified South Sudanese to apply for the 2027–2028 Chevening Scholarship Programme, offering fully funded one-year master’s degree studies at universities across the UK.
Applications for the scholarship close on 6 October 2026. The Chevening Scholarship covers full tuition fees, a living stipend, travel costs and visa fees for successful applicants. The application is open online through the official Chevening website at www.chevening.org.
Speaking during a Chevening information session at the University of Juba on Friday, David Ashley, British Ambassador to South Sudan, said the programme provides an opportunity for South Sudanese professionals to pursue postgraduate studies in the UK.
He encouraged applicants not to give up if they are unsuccessful in their first attempt, saying many successful scholars applied several times before being selected.
“Some of you may only get a scholarship after five, six, seven, eight times of applying,” Amb. Ashley said. “So, if you apply this year and you don’t succeed, don’t get too disheartened; it is very competitive.”
He said applicants who continue trying can gain more professional and life experience, which may strengthen future applications. He also cautioned applicants against relying on artificial intelligence to write their scholarship applications.
“We are looking for people; we are looking for the personality, not just, you know, the generic answer,” Amb. Ashley stated. “We are looking for people who have already shown their potential.”
The ambassador said applicants are expected to have at least two years of professional experience in addition to strong academic qualifications.
