Yambio elects leadership committee for 2026 football tournament

Youth leaders, football administrators, fans, and community representatives from various areas in Yambio County, Western Equatoria State, have elected a new leadership committee to organize the 2026 Yambio Inter-Area Football Tournament.

The peaceful and democratic election took place at the Youth Centre in Yambio on Wednesday, and brought together stakeholders from across the county to select officials who will oversee preparations and management of the upcoming tournament.

Yambio County youth leader David Wandu welcomed the process, describing it as a community-driven initiative aimed at promoting transparency, peace, and youth participation in decision-making.

He said the process was initiated after youth from different areas requested guidance from county authorities on how to organize the tournament transparently and inclusively.

“South Sudan is a democratic country. The youth came to us for guidance, and we allowed dialogue among all stakeholders,” he stated. “Youth from the various areas agreed to follow the will of the majority, and they have now successfully elected their leaders.”

“Sports bring people together, promote peace, and help communities understand one another; it is one of the strongest tools for peaceful coexistence,” Wandu added.

He called on the government, development partners, business community, and individuals of goodwill to support the initiative financially and morally.

For his part, Elisa Mukasi, the Yambio County Sports Inspector, urged the newly elected committee to build on the achievements of previous administrations while addressing existing challenges.

“When football activities are taking place peacefully, it shows that there is peace, unity, and stability in the community,” he said.

He called on the committee to ensure transparency, teamwork, and effective coordination in organizing the 2026 competition.

Meanwhile, Biko James Bage, a state lawmaker, praised the youth for conducting a peaceful and democratic election, describing it as a strong example of unity and civic responsibility.

“I am proud of how the youth came together to elect a team that will lead the Inter-Area Tournament,” he stated. “This tournament unites young people from different areas.”

Bage called on development partners, donors, and well-wishers to support the initiative to help improve its impact and sustainability.

Sabir Isaac Gbuku, the newly elected Chairperson of the 2026 Yambio Inter-Area Football Tournament, called for unity, consultation, and teamwork among all stakeholders.

“I am here to learn, to listen, and to work with others,” he said. “With unity and cooperation, we can deliver a peaceful and successful tournament for our youth and the wider community.”

He said his leadership will begin with internal consultations before engaging key stakeholders, including the Yambio Local Football Association (YLFA), the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and other sports administrators.

He emphasized that all views will be harmonized into a common position before a general stakeholders’ meeting is convened to ensure transparency and coordination.

Gbuku acknowledged past differences among stakeholders but said the new leadership marks a fresh start for unity and cooperation in Yambio football.
