The Government of Western Equatoria State, in collaboration with UNMISS, on Tuesday commenced a two-day forum in Yambio to bring together county commissioners and strengthen governance and service delivery across the state.
The forum, which brought together the county commissioners of Yambio, Mundri West, Mvolo, and Nzara, is designed to discuss challenges, share achievements, and explore strategies to improve local governance. Commissioners from Nagero, Tambura, Ezo, Ibba, Maridi, and Mundri East were absent.
During the opening at the Women Empowerment Centre, Acting Governor Justin Joseph Marona highlighted the importance of the forum as a platform to enhance leadership and service delivery. He urged commissioners to reflect on the trust placed in them by President Salva Kiir, assess the challenges they have faced, and identify opportunities they can use to benefit their communities. The acting governor emphasized that leaders should serve their people selflessly, saying, “God does not want selfish leaders.”
Governor Marona described the forum as a key initiative in strengthening local governance and service delivery, encouraging commissioners to adopt practical solutions that directly improve the lives of citizens in their counties.
State Minister of Local Government and Law Enforcement, Alison Barnaba, also commended the commissioners for maintaining peace and security, describing their work as vital for sustainable development in the state.
Speaking at the event, Emmanuel Dukundane, Acting Head of Field Office (HOFO) at UNMISS, explained that the forum is held annually to provide county commissioners with an opportunity to share experiences, discuss challenges, and plan for improved service delivery. He added that this year’s forum is particularly significant, as South Sudan continues under a transitional government and prepares for the establishment of a permanent constitution and upcoming elections.
“The commissioners’ forum is organized by the State Ministry of Local Government and Law Enforcement with support from UNMISS,” Dukundane said.
County commissioners are expected to brief the media at the conclusion of the two-day forum on Wednesday, providing updates on discussions, decisions, and outcomes.
