Security officials in the Gereida locality, located about 90 kilometers south of Nyala, the capital of Sudan’s South Darfur State, said they have restored calm following an armed dispute between the Falata and Masalit tribes.
Tribal violence occurred on Saturday and Sunday, leaving 16 people dead and 23 others injured, following a quarrel at the Abuja market in Gereida between two young men, one from the Falata and the other from the Masalit community, before the dispute escalated into tribal clashes between the two sides.
Gereida intelligence chief Ammar Ismail described the events in the locality, in a statement to Radio Tamazuj, as horrific and regrettable, saying the incident began as a dispute between individuals and not between the tribes.
He confirmed that the security situation in the area is currently stable following the arrival of military reinforcements from Buram locality and a force from Nyala, consisting of ten vehicles. He called on residents to exercise restraint and respect one another, stressing that they are people from the same area.
He attributed the restoration of calm in Gereida on Monday to the security forces and local mediation efforts that arrived from the areas of Dito, Buram, and Tulus to intervene and resolve the dispute between the two tribes. He said they are advocates of peace, not war.
