The authorities in Western Bahr El Ghazal State’s Jur River County have said more than 5,000 civilians who fled their homes as a result of insecurity in Manyang and surrounding areas have arrived in Tharkueng, Marial Baai, and Nyin Akok and other neighboring areas.
On 14 June, two people were shot and killed in Wuntit in Gogrial East County of Warrap State, resulting in local armed youth carrying out a revenge attack, killing five people and raiding 56 heads of cattle from the Manyang area of Jur River County in Western Bahr El Ghazal State.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj over the weekend, Jur River County Commissioner Santino Manut Akech said over 5,000 people, including children, fled their homes in Manyang.
“I visited Achong, Bitwaya, Marial Baai, Nyin Akok, and Tharkueng areas on Thursday, and there are approximately over 5,000 displaced persons, including children and adults,” he stated. “The displacement started on the same night of the incident.”
The commissioner appealed to humanitarian organizations to urgently assess the needs of the displaced people and support them with food and non-food items such as blankets, shelter, and medicines.
“I am urging humanitarian organizations to come down and make an urgent assessment of the conflict-affected persons,” he said. “They are in dire need of food, medicines, and blankets, cooking utensils, and raincoats because those areas have been experiencing heavy rains these days.”
