The Nuba Mountains Liberation Council has endorsed an initiative by the chairman of Sudan’s Presidential Council, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, to resolve the conflict in Heiban County, South Kordofan State, and restore social cohesion among affected communities.
The endorsement was among several decisions adopted during council meetings held from September 21 to 23, 2026, according to the council’s acting chairman, Hassan Jouda Al-Daw Idris.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday, Al-Daw Idris said the council had adopted a series of administrative, economic, security and political decisions and recommendations aimed at advancing the work of the regional government.
He said the council had issued a statement endorsing Dagalo’s decision to establish a mechanism to implement an initiative aimed at resolving the conflict in Heiban County and restoring relations among the affected communities.
The council also expressed support for a decision issued by Abdelaziz Adam Al-Hilu, chairman of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N), calling for an end to intercommunal fighting in Heiban County.
The conflict in Heiban escalated in March 2026 following longstanding disputes over land demarcation involving Nuba communities, particularly the Otoro and neighbouring groups. The tensions subsequently developed into armed confrontations involving SPLM-N forces loyal to Al-Hilu and Otoro fighters.
Al-Hilu’s SPLM-N faction is allied with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) through the Sudan Founding Alliance (Tasis), a political and military coalition formed in 2025. The alliance is part of the broader conflict between the RSF and Sudan’s army, which has been at war since April 2023. Al-Hilu serves as deputy chairman of the alliance’s Presidential Council, headed by Dagalo.
The fighting in Heiban has continued despite mediation efforts and attempts to secure an informal ceasefire, raising concerns about civilian safety, displacement and relations between communities in the Nuba Mountains.
