The newly sworn-in Director General of South Sudan’s Directorate of Civil Registry, Nationality, Passports and Immigration under the Ministry of Interior, Lieutenant General Achol Cyier Rehan, has pledged to improve the issuance of passports and other civil documents with fairness, transparency and integrity.
Speaking during her reception ceremony in office on Monday, she said more than one million citizens visit the directorate each year seeking various documents, adding that delays in issuing documents can have serious consequences for citizens, particularly students and those who intend to travel.
“A few months ago, a student waited for a month to receive a passport to travel abroad for studies,” Lt. Gen. Achol stated. “This shows how our efficiency directly affects the lives and opportunities of our citizens.”
The new director general pledged to strengthen measures against corruption and ensure that citizens receive certificates and other documents without unnecessary delays.
“We will strengthen measures to fight corruption and ensure that every certificate is issued with fairness, transparency and integrity,” she said. “The efficiency of this institution depends on the commitment of its staff. We must work together to improve our services and respond to citizens’ needs without unnecessary delays.”
Her remarks come at a time when the Directorate faces continued demand for passports, nationality documents and other civil registration services.
