Lieutenant Colonel Elijah Mabor Makuac, the state’s police spokesperson, told Radio Tamazuj on Friday that the incident happened in the Maborngap suburb when the victims were going back home.

“This incident was very unfortunate and tragic. Losing three people at the same time is very sad,” he said. “This is not the first time such an incident has happened.”

Meanwhile, Daniel Laat, the coordinator of the civil society outfit, Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) in Lakes State, said that they were saddened by the deaths. He said the two schoolgirls were students at Landmark Secondary School in Rumbek.

“This is a very sad incident. We know lightning is something that comes without warning,” he said. “We need to communicate to the community that lightning has been killing people this year, and people need to be careful and avoid taking shelter under big trees.”

Laat also advised schools to install lightning arresters to protect infrastructure and people.
