The police in the Lakes State capital, Rumbek Town, have confirmed that they are investigating the circumstances around the killing of a civil defense officer identified as Manyiel Achut Ater at Boh 2 Petrol Station near KCB at 3:15 a.m. on Tuesday.
Lieutenant Colonel Elijah Mabor Makuac Ater, the police spokesperson in the state, told Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday that the deceased was gunned down while on guard duty at the petrol station.
“It was very unfortunate that an unknown gunman came and killed a civil defense officer at Boh 2 Patrol Station in Rumbek Town. We heard the sound of gunshots at the patrol station at approximately 3:15 a.m.,” he said. “The police tried to intervene, but the attackers fled from the scene. Up to now, the police are still following up to identify the criminals to be arrested for investigation.”
Dr. Terran Madit, the medical director at Rumbek State Hospital, confirmed the killing, describing the incident as strange because the deceased was killed by multiple gunshots to the chest and legs.
“Yes, a petrol station guard was indeed brought to hospital for postmortem examination after he was shot multiple times and killed by an unknown gunman inside Rumbek Town”, he said. “The deceased’s body was brought to hospital and was taken home for burial by the relatives after postmortem examinations, which confirmed his death with multiple gunshots on his chest and others on the legs.”
He said this is one of the rarest incidents that occurred in Rumbek Town because most similar events happened outside of the town.
