At least two people were shot dead, six injured, and 46 head of cattle raided during separate attacks in Jonglei State’s Duk County on Wednesday, authorities said.
Peter Chol Galuak, the caretaker county commissioner, told Radio Tamazuj the assailants and cattle rustlers are suspected to have come from the Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA).
“In the first incident on Wednesday evening, armed assailants attacked a cattle camp between Poktap and Patuetnoi areas of Ageer Payam, killing two herders. Simultaneously, a truck moving from Pajut to Poktap was attacked by the same group, resulting in six injuries, including a woman,” he said. “Later the same day they raided 46 cows from Duk Padiet Payam. All these incidents occurred while I was in a meeting with the state governor who was on an official visit to the county.”
The commissioner condemned the attacks and urged restraint among armed youth while urging intervention from the Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA) authorities to arrest the situation.
Several calls to Caretaker GPAA Information Minister Jacob Werchum Jouk have not been answered.
Kenya Mach, an activist with Jonglei State Women Association, condemned the attacks and renewed calls for government intervention.
