The authorities in Aweil Center County in Northern Bahr El Ghazal State have dedicated Tuesday as a day to promote activities of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) Party, with all party members being tasked to attend engagements ahead of the general elections slated for December.

Aweil Center County Commissioner Peter Natale, an SPLM Party member, confirmed to Radio Tamazuj on Friday that they chose Tuesday as a day to conduct party activities.

“We have dedicated Tuesday so that the members of SPLM shall discuss the issues and activities of the party and coordinate SPLM county and payam activities as the general elections are looming,” he said.

Several SPLM Party members welcomed the decision and said the newly appointed county commissioner has come with interactive party activities in contrast to his predecessor, Alakiir Dut Diing.

“The party activities are now better than before because the newly appointed Aweil Center County Commissioner Peter Natale Okech has come with good things, and party activities have resumed effectively,” said Abuk Azuber.

The former commissioner, Alakiir Dut Diing, was accused of not meeting party members regularly.

“The former county commissioner chased away all women’s groups and the majority of party members, but the new county commissioner has gathered people back,” Azuber added. “The SPLM party county headquarters hosted a huge gathering of party supporters on Tuesday.”

Meanwhile, Malong Bak Malong, First Deputy Chairperson for Northern Bahr El Ghazal State Civil Society Network, said all political parties have equal rights when it comes to political space and urged the SPLM Party to allow other parties to operate freely.

“Political space is a right for all political parties, and if the SPLM has chosen a day to promote its political activities, the same thing must happen to other political parties to fix their days to conduct their activities without any resistance,” he said. “Our position as civil society is to ensure there is political equality because those political parties are partners in the peace agreement as well as the upcoming general elections.”
