The tenth edition of the Monyiemiji Football Tournament Final will be held in the Eastern Equatoria State capital, Torit, on Saturday 8 August 2026, following a successful engagement between the leadership of the Monyiemiji Football Association (MFA) and the state government regarding preparations, logistics, and financial support.
The confirmation came after MFA executives met with the Government of Eastern Equatoria State and reached an agreement to ensure the successful hosting of the tournament’s grand finale at Freedom Square in Torit.
“As the president of the Monyiemiji Football Association, we came to confirm the venue for the final of the 10th edition tournament that was proposed by the governor,” said MFA President David Okimo. “We had a very good meeting with the government, and I want to officially communicate to all followers and fans of the Monyiemiji Football Association that the final will take place in Torit on 8 August this year.”
He called on football supporters and communities across Eastern Equatoria and beyond to travel to Torit in large numbers to celebrate the tournament, emphasizing that the competition was created to promote peace, unity, and social cohesion.
“This tournament was initiated purposely to bring peace and unity within the Monyiemiji communities, and it is important for it to take place in Torit because this is where we can celebrate together with the government and our communities,” Okomo added.
Akileo Mboya Peter, the Eastern Equatoria State Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, said the government was pleased to welcome the MFA leadership and confirmed that the state remains committed to supporting the successful organization of the final match.
He explained that preparations for hosting the tournament started months ago, following a commitment by the state government to bring the final game to Torit, the home of the Monyiemiji Tournament Association.
“This is a long journey that started in June, and today we have come together to operationalize the actual game. The presence of the Monyiemiji Tournament management is to seal that commitment,” Minister Mboya stated. “The state government is committed and ready to host this tournament. The support includes logistical issues and security arrangements, and that responsibility will be handled by the state.”
According to MFA President Okimo, financial discussions between the association and the government have been successfully concluded, clearing the way for the final preparations. He said one of the key issues discussed was transportation support for the two finalist teams and representatives from participating teams.
The tenth edition tournament brought together 34 teams. Discussions also focused on supporting representatives from the remaining 32 teams to attend the historic final event in Torit.
“The financial issue was already sorted. We reached a good conclusion with the Government of Eastern Equatoria. Transportation for the teams and representatives was also discussed, and everything is now in place,” Okimo confirmed.
The decision to host the final in Torit follows an earlier pledge by Governor Louis Lobong Lojore, who committed government support to bring the final back to the state capital.
The Monyiemiji Football Tournament has grown into one of the most popular community sporting events in Eastern Equatoria State. The tournament brings together youth and communities from different areas, using football as a tool for promoting peace, unity, and cultural identity.
Over the years, the competition has attracted teams from across Monyiemiji (the Otuho-speaking) communities and has become an annual gathering where football, culture, and community solidarity are celebrated.
Minister Akileo Mboya Peter urged residents of Eastern Equatoria to attend the final in large numbers.
“Let us turn up in a very big number. All communities should come and join our sons and daughters who are coming from Juba and other places to bring this tournament here. It is our pride,” he said.
