The authorities in Central Equatoria State’s Terekeka County on Wednesday outlawed civilians from owning firearms to promote security, the rule of law, and to contain violent disputes related to cattle and marriages.
Conversely, the Juba-Bahr El Ghazal Road, which passes through the county, is a busy and the longest internal route that connects Bahr El Ghazal, parts of Upper Nile through Unity State, plus Sudan’s border states including South Darfur, West Kordofan and East Darfur State.
Abraham Kenyi Peter, the caretaker commissioner for Terekeka County, told Radio Tamazuj on Friday that no citizen is allowed to possess a gun in his jurisdiction.
“No civilian is allowed to move with a gun along the highways, ten payams, and county headquarters because they assume the duties of the organized forces, and they also use [illegal] guns unlawfully in marriage disputes and local misunderstandings,” he stated. “When someone’s sister goes to a dance, the brothers get guns and go to the place and cause chaos.”
The commissioner added that security organs have been directed to follow the order and make sure that it is implemented.
“Violators will be fined SSP 500,000 and six months in jail,” Commissioner Kenyi added.
