1 dead, 33 arrested in Wau cattle auction market violence

The local authorities in the Western Bahr el Ghazal State capital, Wau, have arrested 33 people linked to revenge violence at the Eastern Bank cattle auction on Tuesday.

According to Lt. Col. Santino Oduol Mayen, the state police spokesperson, the violence, which he attributed to a revenge attack, erupted on Tuesday evening at the busy cattle auction market and claimed the life of one person while another sustained injury.

He added that the revenge violence only involved one section of the Lou Mawien Arik Community from Warrap State.

“I would like to update the public on Tuesday’s security incident at the eastern bank at approximately 5:00 p.m. Violence occurred at the cattle auction market in Hai Bahri-Shiki involving individuals from the Lou Mawien Arik Community from Warrap State,” he explained. “The confrontation resulted in the death of one person while another person sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving medication at Wau Teaching Hospital.”

“The police, together with other organized security forces, responded to the incident immediately, and 33 suspects have been peacefully arrested, and criminal investigations under Section 43 of the penal code have been opened,” Lt. Col. Oduol added.

He urged communities to refrain from stirring up and engaging in intercommunal violence.

Officials suspect the violence is linked to the ongoing intercommunal fighting in Warrap State’s Tonj South County.
