Yambio Town Municipality and the youth-led community organisation Resilient Boys Company launched a clean-up campaign on Wednesday to remove accumulated rubbish from markets and improve sanitation in Yambio, Western Equatoria State.
The campaign began at Yambio Open Market, where authorities said waste had built up in several sections. The rubbish is being collected and taken to a designated dumping site in Bazungua.
Yambio Mayor Fozia Abbas urged traders to cooperate with the exercise and warned that people who dump rubbish in public areas could be arrested.
“There is still a lot to be done in Yambio Open Market, but some people are resisting,” she told reporters on Wednesday.
Emmanuel Simon Bakama, managing director of Resilient Boys, said the campaign was prompted by large amounts of waste around shops, restaurants and other parts of the market.
The organisers said the exercise, which involves young men and women, will continue for more than a week before moving to Masia and Pozuo markets.
Residents welcomed the initiative and called for better waste management, particularly around areas where food is prepared and sold.
