A truck overturned onto roadside vendors in Leer County in Unity State on Tuesday, killing a child and injuring two other people.
The accident occurred at about 7:25 a.m. near the Nile Junction roundabout when a truck carrying about seven tonnes of goods, including flour and sugar, overturned while travelling from Juba to Bentiu and Leer County, traffic police said.
Corporal Sergeant James Gatliah Darbar Jock told Radio Tamazuj that a 14-year-old boy died instantly at the scene, while two injured victims were taken to a hospital run by the medical charity Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) for treatment.
“The driver had moved aside to clear the road because other vehicles were passing,” James said. “While trying to reverse, the truck reached a damaged section of the road. As he attempted to move forward again, the truck overturned immediately.”
He said the driver did not appear to be under the influence of alcohol or other substances at the time of the accident.
Darbar appealed to the transport company involved and the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) to help remove the overturned truck and clear the scene.
