Authorities in Rumbek East County, South Sudan’s Lakes State, are searching for a man accused of killing his father, an incident that led his younger brother to die by suicide in Ameth-agok.
Malok Makuei Awur was reportedly killed by one of his sons, while another son, Magang Makuei Awur, took his own life afterward.
Rumbek East County Commissioner Malual Anyuon told Radio Tamazuj on Sunday that the incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. Friday. He said the two brothers had argued, leading one to attack their father with a piece of wood, striking him twice in the head.
Anyuon said the father was taken to Rumbek State Hospital, where he died. Upon hearing the news, the younger brother died by suicide.
Witnesses said the accused son was under the influence of alcohol.
“The younger brother was actually pursuing the killer brother, but when he failed to find him, he decided to die by suicide,” the commissioner said.
Security forces are now searching for the suspect.
Rumbek East Police Inspector Brig. Gen. Mabor Turic said the case is under investigation, with the suspect still at large. Turic urged the community to cooperate with police to apprehend him.
Civil society activist Daniel Laat Kon confirmed the incident and called for justice.
“Let the family leave this matter to the security personnel,” he said. “The cause, we heard, is alcohol, and alcohol consumption in the state is at alarming levels.”
