The Catholic Diocese of Wau Health Department, in partnership with the Federal Republic of Germany, and with support from the health ministry on Tuesday concluded an eye treatment and surgery campaign in the Warrap State capital, Kuajok, on Tuesday.
Dr. Jurel Payii Mamur, the Diocesan Health Coordinator, told Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday that the campaign, which commenced on 3 November, initially targeted 1,200 patients, but the team successfully operated on 786 people.
“It was really a successful operation and the doctors were all South Sudanese,” he explained. “In Kuajok, we had 755 cataract surgeries, and other eye conditions were 31, including pterygium (Ed: removal is the surgical excision of a benign growth from the eye’s surface) and enucleation (the complete removal of the eyeball itself). In the Wau Diocese, there were 786 procedures, and whole total was 1,200.”
Dr. Payii said this was the fourth time the diocese had organized eye surgeries in Kaujok.
“Further surgeries will be organized in Aweil in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, starting from 1 to 12 December targeting 1, 200 patients for patients who did not receive treatment this time,” he disclosed. “We are still moving forward and are committed to continuing to provide more services to the needy population.”
The campaign achieved its goal of providing healthcare to 1,219 patients in Wau and Kuajok, reflecting the diocese’s efforts to improve eye health in the region.
