A 62-year-old man has died and 13 others were injured after a heavy rainstorm struck the internally displaced persons (IDP) site in Malakal, Upper Nile State, authorities said.
Upper Nile State Information Minister Peter Ngwojo said the storm on Saturday destroyed shelters across the camp, leaving many families homeless.
“The rainstorm was very destructive. It damaged many shelters and unfortunately led to the loss of one life and injuries to several others,” Ngwojo told Radio Tamazuj on Monday.
He said the state government met on Monday with humanitarian partners, including NGOs and U.N. agencies, to assess the damage and coordinate an emergency response.
“We met with our partners to evaluate the impact and to urgently mobilize assistance for those affected by this disaster,” he said.
Ngwojo said the injured were being treated at Malakal Teaching Hospital and were in stable condition.
“All the injured are under medical care, and we are closely monitoring their condition,” he said.
He added that many residents had been left without shelter and urgently needed food, medical care and other assistance.
Humanitarian agencies and local authorities are still assessing the full extent of the damage, the minister said.
