South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Monday evening promoted Giir Ngok Ring Thiik to the rank of Lieutenant General and appointed him the new Deputy Director General of the General Intelligence Bureau (GIB) of the National Security Services (NSS).

The GIB is the external security arm of the security service.

Last Wednesday, Kiir appointed Gregory Deng Kuac, his brother-in-law, as the new Undersecretary in the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs. He had been serving as the Deputy Director General at the GIB.

Kiir also promoted the former National Communication Authority Managing Director, Napoleon Adok Gai, from the rank of a Brigadier to Major General.

In other decrees, the president revoked the appointment of Martin Mabior Mawien, Undersecretary of Information in the Ministry of Information, and appointed Mawien Bulabek Chol Deng in his place.

The presidential decrees effecting the changes were aired on state-owned South Sudan Broadcasting Cooperation (SSBC) and no reasons were given for the changes as usual.
