Newborn baby abandoned in Aweil East

The police in Aweil East County in Northern Bahr El Ghazal State have confirmed that a newborn baby girl who was abandoned was rescued in Malualkon town on Saturday morning and taken to a local hospital.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Monday, Col. Bol Deng Dhel, the Aweil East County Police Inspector, said the child was found at 4 a.m. on Saturday and that the search is on for the mother.

“On Saturday at 4 a.m., an abandoned female infant was collected in Malualkon and rushed to Malualkon Hospital. She is under the care of an old woman who found her,” he said. “We are now searching for the mother; we are collaborating with inhabitants to help us with firsthand information on the wanted mother, and we are not getting any information.”

Meanwhile, Ker Wel, the Director of the Child Department in the state Ministry of Gender, Child & Social Welfare, urged the communities to take full responsibility for their children. He condemned the incident and called for justice for everyone involved in the crime.

“We are always creating awareness among our communities not to neglect their children, and we are still doing more advocacy,” he said. “We are carrying out more community engagements, stakeholders’ meetings, and radio talk shows to educate people to take full responsibility for their children, not to abandon them.”

“Those who have committed such a crime must be brought to book and face justice,” he added.
