Juba Mayor calls for public help in city clean-up campaign

Mayor of Juba City Christopher Serafino Wani

The Mayor of Juba has urged all residents to take part in a citywide cleaning campaign on Saturday, 6 December.

Mayor Christopher Serafino Wani said the exercise aimed to promote cleanliness and public health across the South Sudanese capital.

The campaign will be led by Central Equatoria State Governor Emmanuel Adil, alongside other officials.

“I want to encourage every resident of Juba to come out,” Mayor Wani said. He described keeping the city clean as a “collective responsibility.”

The mayor said community participation was key to maintaining a clean and orderly city, and called on households, businesses and institutions to contribute.

The Juba City Council is expected to release further details on specific cleaning areas and coordination plans before the event on 6 December.

Background

Juba, one of the world’s fastest-growing capital cities, faces a chronic and severe solid waste management crisis. The city of over one million people lacks a functional public waste collection system.

Most household and commercial waste is dumped indiscriminately in open drains, vacant plots, and along roadways.

The situation stems from years of under-investment in urban infrastructure, rapid and unplanned population growth following South Sudan’s independence in 2011.
