The Jonglei State Ministry of Labour, Public Service and Human Resource Development has ordered all foreign businesses, companies and foreign workers to renew temporary work permits as part of a statewide compliance and registration exercise.
In a circular seen by Radio Tamazuj, the ministry said the renewal exercise will run from June 30 to Aug. 31, 2026, and is intended to build a database of foreign workers and strengthen labour regulation.
Officials said valid work permits would also enable foreign workers and companies to formally lodge complaints in cases of discrimination, harassment or workplace disputes.
Deng Kuir Bul, Director General at the ministry, urged compliance with the directive.
“Last year, there is a need for a temporary work permit to be issued to all foreign workers… to regulate their activities,” Deng said. “The permit was issued last year in July and is valid for one year, so we are now renewing it.”
He said compliance is mandatory under labour regulations in South Sudan and warned of penalties for failure to renew permits.
“There are always penalties in case of non-compliance,” he said. “We are not expecting violations because we are providing clear guidance.”
Deng also urged foreign community leaders to disseminate the information widely and called on implementing agents to avoid harassment of workers or disruption of business operations.
The ministry said the exercise is part of broader efforts to improve labour governance, protect workers’ rights and ensure accountability among foreign-operated businesses in Jonglei State.
