Authorities in Western Equatoria State have arrested a woman suspected of abducting a one-month-old baby who went missing last week in Yambio County, officials said.
Yambio County Commissioner Angelo Bakote told reporters that on Tuesday that security forces traced and rescued the infant from a residential area in Suk-Siro, Yambio, where the suspect was found in possession of the child.
“The child was recovered from a woman in Suk-Siro,” Bakote said, adding that the infant had been fed with gripe water while in custody.
He said the suspect had been detained and the baby taken to Yambio State Hospital for medical examination and care.
“We urge mothers to take extra care of their children and avoid leaving newborns unattended,” Bakote said.
Dr. Benai Juma, acting medical director at Yambio State Hospital, said the baby had been admitted and was undergoing treatment and assessment by specialists.
A family member confirmed the child’s recovery and thanked community members, security agencies and government authorities for their role in the search.
“The child was found with a woman in Suk-Siro. We appreciate the community, the government, and the security agencies for bringing back our baby,” the relative said.
