Severe flooding has submerged more than 200 homes and shops in Pibor town, the administrative headquarters of the Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA), officials said Sunday.
Jacob Werchum Jouk, GPAA’s information minister, told Radio Tamazuj on Sunday that 204 households, including 47 shops, have been affected, and the main market has partially shut down due to the rising floodwaters.
“Forty-seven shops are not operational because they’re under water. Traders have abandoned them, and even the safer sections of the market are surrounded by floodwaters,” Jouk said. “The situation is dire. In Pibor town alone, over 100 homes are affected, not to mention other counties.”
Local residents also reported major disruptions to daily life and livelihoods.
“It has been raining consistently for a week now, displacing us from our kiosks,” said Mary Korok, a food vendor. “Our livelihoods are destroyed. We appeal for food aid and shelter.”
Joseph Nyao, director of the GPAA Relief and Rehabilitation Commission, warned that the situation could worsen if rains continue.
“It has been raining for four to five days, and even rivers are overflowing, inundating homes and shops,” Nyao said. “In Pibor, 47 shops and 157 homes are affected. Other counties are also severely impacted, with many residents displaced.”
