The Catholic Diocese of Torit has called for an immediate end to hostilities and impartial investigations into violence at the Nakeke gold mining site in Kapoeta, Eastern Equatoria State, following reports of deaths, injuries and rising tensions.

In a press statement dated 28 October 2026, the Diocese condemned the violence and urged all parties involved to exercise restraint, protect civilians and resolve their grievances through peaceful dialogue.

The statement, signed by Bishop Rt. Rev. Emmanuel Bernardino Lowi Napeta, said the violence had resulted in loss of life, injuries, and heightened tensions in the area.

“We call for an immediate end to hostilities and urge all parties to reject retaliation and protect human life,” the Diocese said.

The Church extended condolences to families who lost their loved ones and called for safe access to medical treatment for those wounded in the violence.

It urged Karengak community leaders to engage young people, women and elders in addressing grievances through peaceful dialogue, while calling on security forces and local youth to avoid actions that could further escalate tensions.

The Diocese also appealed to local youth to return peacefully to their cattle camps and resume their livestock-keeping activities as part of efforts to restore normalcy.

On the role of mining companies, the Church called for stronger engagement with surrounding communities, urging companies operating in Kapoeta to establish memoranda of understanding with local communities to address grievances and prevent future disputes.

“Mining companies operating in Kapoeta should establish memoranda of understanding with local communities to address concerns and prevent future disputes,” the statement said.

The Diocese further called on authorities to ensure that individuals suspected of criminal activities are referred to relevant institutions for investigation and appropriate legal action.

It cautioned the public against circulating unverified information that could inflame tensions and fuel further violence.

The Church also called for particular protection of children, women, elderly people and persons with disabilities, while urging authorities to facilitate assistance and healthcare services for affected families.

On accountability, the Diocese called for impartial investigations into the violence, stressing that justice should be pursued through lawful procedures without blaming or punishing entire communities.

“We call for impartial investigations into the violence and respect for the dignity of every person. Responsibility should be established through lawful processes, without blaming or punishing an entire community,” the statement said.

The Catholic Diocese urged government authorities, traditional leaders, youth representatives and mining companies to agree on clear responsibilities and timelines to implement peace resolutions without delay.

It reaffirmed the Church’s commitment to peace, dialogue and reconciliation, warning against allowing confrontation and revenge to deepen divisions among communities.

“These commitments must translate into action that restores security and prevents further violence,” the Diocese said.

The Church called on residents and people of goodwill to support affected families and work towards lasting peace in Nakeke and surrounding communities.

The statement did not specify the number of people killed or injured, identify those responsible for the violence, or provide details of the circumstances that triggered the confrontation.
