Armed group attacks chief, workers at bridge project in Ibba County

Armed individuals attacked a local chief and construction workers during a bridge project in Ibba County last Friday, officials said.

No deaths or serious injuries were reported, but property was destroyed and a community leader was beaten.

County Commissioner Wilson Tetela told Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday that the assailants appeared to be motivated by hunger and targeted the chief and workers after being denied food.

“The incident appears to be about food. The chief did not provide any, and those involved in the bridge construction were attacked. No weapons were found,” Tetela said.

The local official further said the situation is now under control and the community is safe.

A youth from the area, who requested anonymity due to safety concerns, told Radio Tamazuj that the chief of Mirau was tied up and beaten during the incident.

The attackers also destroyed cassava crops, food supplies, and other property at the construction site, the youth said.

Chief Council Joy has reportedly identified some of the suspects, who are believed to be hiding in nearby bushes.

Police Commissioner Maj. Gen. Phillip Madut Tong said the incident had not yet been officially reported to law enforcement, but authorities would follow up for verification.
