The health authorities in Unity State said they have recorded over 136,931 malaria cases and 12 deaths across the state between June and October.

Tot Jang, the acting director general at the state health ministry, told Radio Tamazuj over the weekend that the cases were recorded at primary health centers in the counties of Bentiu, Panyjinjar, Mayom, Leer, Guit, Rubkona, Koch, and Mayiendit and marked a 30 percent increment in cases.

“We identified the 138,931 cases and 12 malaria deaths between June and October,” he stated. “The malaria outbreak comes after the health ministry and its partner failed to distribute mosquito nets to the communities.”

For her part, Nyawal Michael, a patient at Bentiu IDP camp, said she was suffering from headache, fever, dizziness, and joint pains, which later turned out to be malaria.

“Those are the beginning signs of malaria, and I experienced all those signs and symptoms of the disease,” she lamented. “The problem is that there is insufficient medical assistance.”

Meanwhile, Daniel Mathiang, a resident of Bentiu Town, blamed the malaria outbreak on the failure of the state health ministry to distribute mosquito nets.

“We are appealing to the state ministry of health and its partners to distribute mosquito nets to prevent malaria,” he stated.
