The traffic police in the Lakes State capital, Rumbek, are holding a WFP truck driver after he was involved in an accident that took the life of Kok Majok Kok, a nutritionist with Plan International.
The incident happened when the WFP truck collided with the deceased, who was riding a motorcycle in War-chol Malei Village on Tuesday at 2:00 P.M.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday, Major General Chol Gorjok, the director of the Lakes State Traffic Police Department, confirmed the accident, saying the deceased died on the spot.
“The victim, identified as Kok Majok Kok, was knocked dead on the spot, and the WFP vehicle driver who killed him has been arrested and transferred to Rumbek Central Main Prison after preliminary investigations”, he said. ” The decision to transfer him to the main prison immediately was to avoid tension between him and the family of the deceased.”
According to Gen. Gorjok, Majok’s body was handed over to the family on Tuesday evening.
“The vehicle was identified as an NGO vehicle which went to the area for the distribution of some items,” he further explained. “The motorcycle rider and the vehicle driver collided because they didn’t see each other because of thick bushes.”
He urged the bereaved family to remain calm and allow the government to investigate the cause of the accident.
Meanwhile, Angelina Adhel Malual, the chairperson of the Civil Society Network in Lakes State, said she was saddened by the incident and sent condolences to the deceased’s family.
“My message to the people of Lakes State and the general public is that motorists need to be extra careful when driving on highways and pedestrians also need to be careful while walking,” she said. “You need to know that your life is very important and the life of the other person is also important. There have been many road accidents in the last two years.”
“The accident that claimed the life of the nutritionist, Kok, is a great loss to the people of Lakes State, especially to the students and learners he has been teaching,” Adhel added.
