The U.N. Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) confirmed Tuesday that a shooting involving a military peacekeeper occurred inside its base in Malakal, Upper Nile state.

UNMISS spokesperson Priyanka Chowdhury told Radio Tamazuj that the incident resulted in the deaths of two personnel. “An investigation is underway, and we express our deep regret and condolences to the families and colleagues of the deceased,” she said.

The confirmation follows reports received by Radio Tamazuj that Cambodian U.N. peacekeepers had a disagreement among themselves, leading one to shoot and kill a female team leader before turning the weapon on himself.

“Two personnel died, and two others were injured in the incident which took place on Tuesday at around 4:30PM,” said one source, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

UNMISS was initially established for one year on July 9, 2011, under U.N. Security Council Resolution 1996, with provisions for renewal as needed. Since then, the mission has been repeatedly extended, with the Security Council citing ongoing threats to international peace and security in South Sudan.
