Plans are underway to transform part of Juba’s Konyo-Konyo Market into a modern commercial center, according to a proposal presented to Central Equatoria State Governor Emmanuel Adil Anthony by T Blackstone Investment Group during discussions that involved state and city authorities.
The company proposes to develop about 800 shopping spaces, alongside offices and other supporting facilities.
“The proposed development will feature a modern upscale market space equipped with essential facilities and amenities designed to improve functionality, business operations, and the overall environment for traders and customers,” a statement from the governor’s office said on Monday.
Konyo-Konyo is one of Juba’s major markets and an important distribution point for goods across South Sudan.
However, the market has long faced challenges, including congestion, poor waste management, inadequate drainage and hygiene concerns.
The market has also been affected by several fires in recent years. A fire in December 2024 destroyed about 56 shops and resulted in one confirmed death. Other fires were reported in parts of the market in February and April 2026.
If implemented, the project could significantly change the appearance and operation of Konyo-Konyo Market while addressing some of its longstanding infrastructure and safety challenges.
The proposal remains at the planning stage, with no construction timeline or project cost announced.
