Two of the five boats stranded at Adok port in Leer County, Unity State, due to security concerns left for Malakal on Thursday after a two-month delay.
Diang Kuol Kur, one of the boat captains, confirmed to Radio Tamazuj that they had resumed their journey. Three boats remain docked at Adok port, while one barge returned to Juba on Thursday over safety concerns.
“We left Adok port and are now on the river heading toward Mayendit County and Koch,” Kur said, adding that their convoy was escorted by forces from the SPLA-IO.
One boat is expected to stay in Malakal, while the other will continue to Melut County.
Yai Pazale, spokesperson for SPLA-IO Sector Two, confirmed the departure and destination of the two boats.
“The SPLA-IO provided forces to accompany them,” Pazale said.
