Two unidentified gunmen attacked Tambura Hospital in Tambura County, Western Equatoria State, on Friday morning, forcing the facility to close temporarily.
County Police Commissioner Philip Madut Tong told Radio Tamazuj that the armed men stormed the hospital, fired gunshots into the air and stole two motorbikes before fleeing.
“No one was injured or killed, and security forces are pursuing the suspects,” Madut said.
The police commissioner said security personnel are deployed in Tambura to protect civilians and urged residents to report anyone wearing unauthorized uniforms or acting suspiciously.
Dr. Gabriel Benai Juma, the county’s medical director, said the attack occurred while staff were working.
“They came, fired shots and took a motorbike. We have decided to close the hospital for now while we monitor the situation,” he said. “We have reported security concerns before, but we do not feel well protected.”
The attackers, who covered their faces and wore police uniforms, caused panic among staff and patients.
Midwife Anigia Angelina, who was on duty, said the gunmen entered around 9 to 10 a.m.
“They fired shots, covered their faces and stole a motorbike from a patient. Everyone ran away,” she said, calling for government intervention and better security for health workers.
Tambura’s acting paramount chief, Bandaisa Thomas, said local leaders heard the gunfire and were gathering details.
“This happened while we were in a meeting with the county commissioner. We are working to get the full facts,” he said.
On Wednesday, unidentified gunmen shot and killed a Catholic Church official in Tambura.
The cause of this week’s worsening insecurity in Tambura County, located about 84 kilometers from Yambio, the state capital, remains unclear.
