The traders in Jou Market in the Western Bahr el Ghazal State capital, Wau, on Sunday commended the state government’s move to deploy the police in the market to check theft and protect them.
Several traders who spoke to Radio Tamazuj, however, said more police personnel should be deployed to ensure security and control crime in the market ahead of the Christmas festivities.
Mohammed Saleh, a market vendor, said there have been many theft cases in the market and thanked the government for safeguarding shops and reducing theft-related losses.
“We need increased security in the market because there have been many theft cases recently. However, they must increase the number of police,” he said. “There are people who dress very well but are involved in stealing. We thank the government for providing us security because, as we speak, theft has reduced.”
Relatedly, Saleh said commodity prices have dropped.
“The prices in the market have reduced, and everything is going on well with our police moving within the market to control crime,” he said.
Another trader, Musa Ibrahim, also acknowledged that the deployment of the police has brought relief.
“As of now, stealing has stopped, but we are asking for the deployment of more security forces in the market,” he said.
The traders’ positive feedback highlights the crucial impact of government-led security initiatives on market stability. Continued investment in security personnel and resources will be vital to sustaining a safe trading environment and supporting the economic well-being of the community, especially during high-traffic periods.
