The commissioner of Lakes State’s Rumbek North County has confirmed that a local health worker was ambushed and killed in Amok Village by bandits while riding a motorcycle to the state capital, Rumbek, on Monday.
John Bilu Awuol told Radio Tamazuj that the assailants have not been identified, and it was not clear whether they are local or came from a neighboring county or state.
“The attackers who killed the nurse who was riding his motorcycle to Rumbek are not known,” he said. “I informed the security organs about the attack.”
The commissioner urged calm, saying one cannot take revenge against unknown criminals.
“People have to be patient; the matter will be dealt with using the law until we get the full information about what happened,’ he said. “No one should attack another without evidence. People should not speculate about who killed the nurse or which community they are from.”
“Everyone, including the relatives of the deceased, must remain calm while we wait for the investigations and information from other jurisdictions,” Commissioner Bilu added.
Meanwhile, Daniel Laat Kon, Chairperson of the Civil Society Organizations Network in Lakes State, condemned the killing and urged the government of Lakes State to carry out a thorough investigation and hold the perpetrators accountable.
“If educated people and health workers who save lives are killed, the government should take it very seriously and bring the perpetrators to book,” he stated. “When you hunt down the perpetrators and the law takes its course, people will know that the government is serious.”
