A 17-year-old motorcyclist died Monday following a road accident in Magwi town, Eastern Equatoria State, authorities confirmed.
The victim, identified as Komakech Daniel, reportedly lost control of his motorcycle after hitting a pothole while speeding. He sustained critical injuries and was taken to the Diocese of Torit Health Facility in Magwi, where he later died.
Magwi County Traffic Director Onge Jackson told Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday that the accident occurred as the teenager was returning to the town center from Fr. Léopoldo.
“There was a boy riding a motorcycle from Magwi towards Fr. Léopoldo. On his way back, he was speeding and hit a pothole, which caused the accident,” Jackson said. “He was referred for treatment but passed away hours later. The road condition is poor, with many potholes.”
Dr. Ochongodok John, medical director at the Diocese of Torit Primary Health Care Center, confirmed the cause of death was internal bleeding from a severe head injury.
“This boy was brought in critical condition with a head injury, particularly on the occipital side,” Dr. John said. “Despite our efforts, he died within two to three hours of arrival. Cases like this are now common—we receive five to seven motor accident cases a week, most of them with minor injuries.”
Motorcycle accidents, particularly involving young riders, are frequent in Magwi. Authorities attribute the trend to overspeeding and poor road conditions. Traffic police have repeatedly urged boda boda riders and road users to follow traffic regulations.
Oroma Moses, a state activist and executive director of CROP South Sudan, expressed his condolences and called on the public to be cautious.
“I’m urging boda boda riders, passengers, and pedestrians to avoid speeding,” he said. “The death of this young boy has deeply affected the community. He was still in school and had a bright future ahead. It’s a painful loss.”
