The Sudanese community in Yambio, South Sudan’s Western Equatoria State, elected new leadership over the weekend in a bid to foster unity and cooperation among its members.
The election, held Saturday and attended by local authorities and community members, aimed to strengthen peaceful coexistence for Sudanese nationals in the area.
The size of the Sudanese community in Yambio is not known, as no official figures have been released.
Sudan and South Sudan share deep historical and cultural links, having been one country until South Sudan gained independence in 2011 following a long conflict.
Yambio County Commissioner Michael Ismail Medi, who attended as guest of honor, congratulated the new leadership.
“You are part of our society here in Yambio,” Medi said. “We appreciate your peaceful coexistence and your efforts in business and community life. Let us continue to work together for peace and progress.”
The newly elected chairperson, Sadiq Sali Issa, pledged to lead fairly and promote unity.
“From today, we reject tribalism and hatred,” Sadiq said. “We are one Sudanese community under my leadership, and I will work to ensure unity, order, and cooperation among our people.”
He urged Sudanese residents to register with the community leadership for coordination and to collaborate with local authorities. He also emphasized the importance of mutual support during times of hardship.
His deputy, Usman Yusuf, called on all Sudanese nationals in Yambio to respect the laws of South Sudan.
“We are guests in this country,” Yusuf said. “Let us focus on living peacefully, working hard, and improving our livelihoods while maintaining good relations with our hosts.”
The event concluded with a commitment from both the community and local authorities to continue promoting peace and development in the county.
