SSPDF officer arrested after deadly Bor river port blast

Authorities in Jonglei State have arrested a South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) officer following a grenade explosion at Nyok Agany River Port in Bor on Monday evening that killed one person and injured eight others, police said.

Captain Akec Mapiau Dau, the police spokesperson in Jonglei State, said the suspect is in custody and under investigation.

“The suspect has been arrested and investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the grenade explosion,” he said.

He said the injured were receiving treatment at Bor State Hospital and other nearby facilities.

“We urge the public to remain calm and allow authorities to conduct thorough investigations,” Akec said, adding that the suspect would face prosecution if found guilty.

Witnesses said panic spread through the busy river port, a key transport and commercial hub, as people fled the area and security forces cordoned off the scene.

Authorities have not disclosed the motive for the blast.
