Akol Paul Kordit, secretary general of South Sudan’s ruling SPLM, has given $21,000 to 210 workers at Kiir Mayardit Women Hospital in Rumbek after months without salaries.
Kordit made the payment on Monday during a visit to the hospital following an SPLM retreat in Rumbek. He said each worker would receive $100 in recognition of their continued service despite delays in salary payments.
“These 210 workers at Kiir Mayardit Women Hospital, who have been working day and night for months without pay, I will give each of them one hundred dollars,” Kordit said.
He appealed to individuals and other well-wishers to support the hospital, saying it needs collective assistance to continue providing services to the community.
Kordit also said he would seek to provide similar support in the future whenever he is able to raise another $21,000.
It was not immediately clear whether the money was donated by Kordit personally or came from the SPLM’s funds.
South Sudan’s health sector faces chronic funding shortages, delayed salary payments and a lack of medicines and equipment. Heavy reliance on aid, conflict and weak infrastructure have further strained health services, particularly in remote areas.
