Authorities in Juba County have launched a monthly cleaning campaign targeting residential areas, markets and business centres in an effort to improve sanitation and reduce the risk of disease.
The county’s director of environment and sanitation, Elizabeth Cirisio Lado, urged residents and traders to take responsibility for keeping their surroundings clean.
Speaking during a cleaning exercise at Gudele Market on Saturday, Cirisio said sanitation should be a shared responsibility between residents and the authorities.
“Cleaning is a collective responsibility. Everyone should clean their own place, while the county will provide workers and vehicles to help keep our markets clean and free from disease,” she said.
She said the campaign would cover business areas along major roads in Juba County, starting from the county’s border with Juba City Council and extending from Doha to Kapuri.
The exercise began at 6 a.m. and will be held on the first day of every month in different parts of the county, Cirisio said.
Thomas Bagola Cosmos, a medical practitioner at Gudele Market, welcomed the initiative but called for more frequent cleaning.
“We appreciate the campaign team for coming to clean the market,” Bagola said. “We encourage them to continue this exercise, preferably twice a month, to help keep Juba clean and reduce health risks.”
The campaign comes amid concerns over waste management and sanitation in parts of Juba, particularly around busy markets and commercial areas.
