A 30-year-old SPLAIO soldier identified as Mario Ohisa died by suicide on Friday at the Irube Cantonment site in Torit County of South Sudan’s Eastern Equatoria State.
The late allegedly shot twice in the air before turning the gun on himself on Friday at midday.
Colonel Dominic Odemi, the Area joint Military Ceasefire Committee Administrator in Eastern Equatoria State told Radio Tamazuj that the cause of the suicide is unknown but that military officials are still investigating the matter
“We have a soldier who shot himself without even quarreling with anybody. He was under the influence of alcohol,” Col. Odemi said. “He was sleeping and when he woke up, he ran to the house and picked a gun and shot twice and then shot himself just like that. We brought his body to his father’s house.”
Major General Patrick Ohiti, Commander at Irube Cantonment Site noted that the soldier killed himself due to economic hardships.
According to Ohiti, since the second batch of forces arrived at the cantonment site, they have not received any food or medical supplies.
