The governor of Sudan’s North Darfur State, Nimr Mohamad Abdel Rahman, on Thursday revealed that the governor of South Darfur, Hamid El-Tijani Hanoun, has suggested that the experience and efforts of the mediation committee and the Committee of the Wise that was formed to mediate between the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Al-Fashir to replicated in Nyala town, which at the moment is still witnessing clashes between the belligerents.

In June, North Darfur State Governor Nimr Mohammad Abdel Rahman announced a ceasefire agreement in his state at the initiative of the civil administration, civil society leaders, and the police.

Abdulrahman expressed his hope that the Darfur region and the rest of Sudan’s states could follow the example of North Darfur in maintaining social peace in times of war.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj following a meeting with the governor of South Darfur State on Thursday, Abdel Rahman said they discussed the humanitarian conditions of those affected by the war, especially the newly displaced, and how to deliver humanitarian aid, in addition to easing the difficulties facing the joint force in protecting humanitarian and commercial convoys to the region – as well as delivering fuel to operate electricity and water stations, providing basic services, especially medicines, which have become completely non-existent.

“We discussed very important issues about the humanitarian situation in general and the newly arrived displaced people in particular, and how to deliver humanitarian assistance to them,” said Abdulrahman. “We also discussed the huge role played by the joint security forces and how to remove any obstacles facing them in protecting humanitarian and commercial convoys as well as delivering fuel to operate electricity and water stations. These are the basic issues we discussed as well as the security situation.”

Abdulrahman mentioned that the governor of South Darfur, Hamid Al-Tijani Hanoun, for his part, called for replicating the experience of the mediation committee and the committee of the wise to contribute to stability in Nyala town.

The governor revealed that Hanoun recently arrived in Al-Fasher and is now arranging to travel to Port Sudan to brief the national government on the current situation in South Darfur.
