One killed in armed attack at Juba home, police say

A man was shot dead and two of his relatives injured in an overnight attack by armed assailants in the Souk Zande area of the capital, Juba, police said on Thursday.

Police spokesperson Daniel Justin Buolo told Radio Tamazuj that unidentified gunmen attacked the family’s residence on Wednesday night, killing the man inside the house.

“The victim was shot dead, and then his younger brother, aged 28, was injured,” Buolo said.

Buolo further said the victim’s 24-year-old sister also alleged that she was raped during the attack.

Police said the injured victims were taken to hospital for treatment while officers secured the scene and launched an investigation.

“We took the other victims to the hospital for treatment, secured the scene of the crime, and then started the investigation,” Buolo said.

He said the case had been opened at Gudele police station and that officers from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) had been assigned to investigate the incident.

“No arrests have been made so far. The process is still ongoing and we will deploy some of our CID officers to follow up the case,” he added.

The motive for the attack remains unclear.

The incident has raised concerns among residents over insecurity and violent crime in parts of Juba.

Buolo said police patrols remained active in residential areas of the capital and urged the public to cooperate with security forces by reporting suspicious activity.

“We are doing our best through night patrols and police sectors in residential areas so that whenever there is a problem, the police can respond quickly,” he said.

“There is a need for us to work together through timely reporting whenever people notice suspicious movements or possible criminal activities,” he added.
