The government of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, in collaboration with the national government, has launched cultivation of 2,500 acres at the Aweil Rice Scheme for the 2026–2027 agricultural season, a state official said on Wednesday.
State Minister of Agriculture Garang Chan Atak told Radio Tamazuj that planting began on Wednesday in the presence of national and state officials, alongside development partners.
He said the 2,500-acre target applies to government-managed production, noting that private farmers operate independently and are not included in the official acreage plan.
“For the private farmers, I have not included their target number of acres because they cultivate in their own way. They usually request land from the State Ministry of Agriculture and the Aweil Rice Scheme,” Atak said.
A private farmer said preparations were already underway, adding that about 800 feddans of land had been prepared for planting.
“We have already prepared 800 feddans, ready for planting for this agricultural season,” the farmer said.
The Aweil Rice Scheme is a national agricultural project supported by international and regional donors, with the state government responsible for oversight, protection and monitoring of its implementation.
