New university to be established in Sudan’s East Darfur

The Sudanese Higher Education Minister Dr. Sumeya Abu Kashwa announced that the government intends to establish Ed Daein University in East Darfur State.

The project will be funded by the federal ministry and the Darfur Transitional Regional Authority, providing laboratories, lecture halls and libraries. The project is scheduled to be completed within a two year period.

In his remarks to the press on Monday, the information director in the Higher Education Ministry Osama Mohamed Awad stated the ministry will present a draft bill to the National Legislative Assembly for deliberations and its enactment into law.

He noted the chairperson of the Roads, Transport and Land Committee in the parliament, Abdullah Ali Masar and a delegation from East Darfur State Assembly headed by Ali Mohamed Ma‘ali have affirmed their support the establishment of the University of Ed Daein.

The proposed university in East Darfur State is a part and parcel of an ‘education revolution’ to bring more universities to Darfur as well as improve the existing ones, according to the Sudanese official.
